From personal experience, I would say the parasocial theory is somewhat limited within the SEO/online marketing industry. Much of our networking is with fellow industry professionals. As such, rather than a teacher/student relationship, it's far closer to a peer-to-peer relationship. The parasocial relationship is probably only apparent on biggest industry blogs such as SEO Book/SEO Moz. But I'm sure it applies in other industries.
