A few posts ago I discussed some Link building techniques and in some respects directory submissions can be considered as another good way of gaining links – but just like there are a lot of linkfarms and spammy link sites out there, there are also a lot of rubbish directories.

Due to the high volume of these rubbish directories, some SEO’s believe that directory submission isn’t an effective tool anymore, but if you choose the right directories and for the right reasons you’ll find that it can still be quite beneficial.

The Google Webmaster Guidelines suggest you submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and the Yahoo! Directory, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites.

So other than those couple mentioned above, how do I know which directories are good and which aren’t?

Think of it like any other form of advertising for your website – would you put an advertisement for your company in a newspaper that you know no one reads, has very poor quality articles, little credibility in the news circles and is a general mockery of the print media industry? Well just like you wouldn’t advertise in such a paper, you wouldn’t submit your website to a directory that fits the same criteria.

To help narrow things down even further we’ve started working with another local SEO firm RedBlock to build an Australian Local Search and Business Directory resource.

So if you are interested in local search and online business directory developments around Australia, make sure you check out : Start Listing.
